Live On Set is an interactive installation that unfolds on the set of a new play in development titled The Grüb by Johanna Kasimow. Designer Maiko Matsushima’s set is a theatrical world split in two; one world defined by its absence of light in a small, underground pit, the other a world of modern convenience in a light-filled apartment. The architecture explores themes of hiding and isolation with the logic of the clown; the actors obscure their faces from the audience through increasingly absurd tactics. How do you move when your face is hidden? How do you eat an apple in a dark hole? Using props from the play, and the theatrical rules of each world, the audience is invited to play in the spaces of the set as embodied research for the project.
